Patience gives you a peace of mind but it alone kills time.

Work gives you the same but it also adds value.

First Look: Nokia N9

Posted: June 24, 2011 in Gadgets

It’s been a long time we have seen anything extraordinary from the mobile phone giant Nokia. Few years ago people used to swear by their product. Hit after hit. Soon, the BBs and HTCs came with their Blackberry OS and Android and their respective upgrades and ate the market share of Symbian.

So, Nokia after it’s not as expected comeback with N8 and E7, have now come up with N9. So what is so exciting about that? The exciting part about this news is that Nokia will finally introduce its much talked about OS ‘MeeGO’ that they were working on, since a long time.

Before I say more, let’s take a look at its specs:

General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps

Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone

Dimensions: 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm, 76 cc

Weight: 135 g

Display: 3.9″ 16M-color FWVGA (480 x 854 pixels) AMOLED capacitive touchscreen; Gorilla Glass, anti-glare polarizer, curved display, multi-touch input

Chipset: 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, PowerVR SGX530 GPU, TI OMAP 3630 chipset

RAM: 1GB

OS: MeeGo OS, v1.2 Harmattan

Memory: 16/64GB storage, no MicroSD slot

Camera: 8 megapixel auto-focus camera with face detection, touch focus and geotagging; HD (720p) video recording at 30fps, LED flash, front facing camera, video-calls

Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 2.1, standard MicroUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, TV-out, NFC

Other Info: Polycarbonate unibody, Built-in accelerometer, Proximity sensor, uses MicroSIM cards

The N9 looks sleek and crisp. Nice form and clean edges. Volume rocker and a camera button on its right side (no button provided for screen lock/unlock), LED flash and the camera at the back and Power button, USB, microsim slot and a 3.5mm jack at the top and a speaker at the bottom. The microsim slot can be removed out completely which looks a bit inconvenient now, but may be it would be beneficial tomorrow. No cover provided for lens. The body looks sturdy. It has a plastic body but a polycarbonate unibody. Simply put a better quality plastic.

It boasts of Nokia’s AMOLED, which is considered one of the best in the market. In addition it has FWVGA (Full Wide Video Graphics Array). Playing games and watching videos will be a pleasure. The phone also has the nHD which is actually a shortcoming from Nokia which they still haven’t improved yet. It has a weird 3.9 inch Gorilla glass display. It’s quite irritating to know that Nokia didn’t go for a perfect 4 inch screen when there are quite a few phones that boast of a perfect 4 inch screen.

Nokia can proudly show off its new swanky OS MeeGo. The swipes during navigation are of the most novel type. So much so that Nokia haven’t even included a back button on the phone. With these novel swiping actions you can reach the main screen easily. Please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tit5X7hH3xY for the demo video). The menu looks like that of the android. Also the notifications and their behavior are similar to that of the android. What’s different is that unlike android where we have to go to settings and then manage applications and then uninstall or edit the applications, here we just need to press and hold for 2 seconds to edit the applications and press a red cross on the right hand corner of the application to uninstall them. There is a task switcher for knowing all the history and the applications which are running in the background. Also the widgets size can be adjusted (2×2 or 3×3 grid). The most recently opened applications appear on the top. Apart from this option there is also an option wherein you will see list of all the thumbnails of recently opened applications.

The cut-paste and copy-paste system is also like the android (very simple and user friendly) and so will be the bucket of applications provided in the phone (I hope). The default search page in the phone is Bling. It has a universal search bar to search all possible files in the phone. The music player is simple to use but nothing to boast about.

The camera has a sensor for  8.7 megapixels but manages a good  8 megapixels. There is a front facing camera for video calling. The lens is a certified Carl Zeiss. The LED flash of Nokia is already well known. The lens is capable of capturing 4:3  8 megapixels pictures or 3:2  7 megapixels pictures. Right from touch focus, face detection to geotagging all the features and the application support are taken care of.

A mention about the new NFC support that Nokia will now provide:

First of all what is NFC? Well here is the answer – Near Field Communication is a new way of sharing files is very similar to Bluetooth. However, it allows you to connect to another device and wirelessly send whatever you’d like to that device. Unlike Bluetooth though, this is an NFC service, so you have to be very close to each other and basically touch phones like if you were “bumping.”

The phone has promising features like the novel swipe action, list of thumbnails showing the running application, recently opened applications on top, nice form factor, NFC etc. But the main and most attractive feature this time that Nokia provides is the OS itself.

With N9 Nokia opens up the gates for the still so amateur but promising kid on the block called MeeGo.

“All we hope for is an angel in the demon sea but all we find is an ocean of devils’ spree”

All I care for..

I kill my emotions more and more

Your smile is all i care for

I call myself crazy as nothing is sure

And your smile is all i care for

My eyes may shut if you cross the shore

Because this life craves for you and nothing more

But she stepped out through the door

She crossed the shore and left my heart sour

And now a cry is all i care for
